It was twenty-seven years ago this August when my family and I embarked on a life-changing journey to Reggio Emilia, Italy. My son Alden, now 38, was just 11 years old, and his younger brother Christopher, now 35, was only 8. That was a long time ago, but none of us have ever been the same since living abroad, immersed in a new language and culture, and making our way in a place where everything felt so refreshingly new.
One of the most captivating aspects of living in Italy was the palpable exuberance and deep reverence for aesthetics that pervaded every facet of life – from the food and design to the very fabric of the culture itself. I can still vividly recall an article I read in the Christian Science Monitor that year, where the author, Ann Taylor, described a moment of pure enchantment while on sabbatical in Florence with her family. As she got caught up in her own whirlwind of planning and reviewing, one of her children simply said, “Che bello questo momentino” – “How lovely this little moment.” That phrase has stayed with me all these years, reminding me of the importance of presence, authenticity, and the profound beauty that can be found in the simplest of moments.
This ethos of embracing the aesthetic and poetic ways of knowing is central to the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, which I had the privilege of experiencing firsthand during my sabbatical.
